Geese

The first sound you will hear when you come onto our property will be the very loud honking of “Mother’s Gooses”. In spring of 2023, we welcomed two pair of African Geese to the homestead.

African Geese are large geese, with a signature knob on the top of their beak and a “waddle” below their head. They come in two color options, an all white, or a brown/grey. They are not a very high egg producer, only laying between 20-40 eggs per year, and they hatch in 30-32 days. These geese are known for making attachments to their mate, so since we have two of each, the plan is not to eat any of the current adult geese. However, this breed of goose is known for producing high-quality, lean meat, and is one of the top breeds of geese for roasting. Now, I raised these 4 geese from hatchlings, so I do not intend to eat them. We have eaten their eggs, which are so rich. If they hatch any of their eggs, we may consider trying one of their offspring in the roasting pan….we will have to wait and see.
